Five-time NCAA Division 1 champion and indoor collegiate shot put record holder Turner Washington, an Arizona State graduate, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing Aug. 19 in the men's discus throw qualifying round at his first World Athletics Championships representing the United States in Budapest, Hungary. Washington, who won the Division 1 discus title June 9 with a sixth-round throw of 217-3 (66.22m) at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas, also finished runner-up July 6 at the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships with a fourth-round effort of 215-3 (65.60m) at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Washington, 24, also reflects on training during the past month with coach Ryan Whiting and how instrumental his guidance and mentorship has been throughout the outdoor season. He also examines how significant it has been to achieve the success this year after Washington considered leaving the sport following a second-place finish in the shot put and 10th-place performance in the discus at last year's Division 1 outdoor final as a result of a knee injury, struggling with his mental health and an ambition to pursue a future in sports law. Washington explains how meaningful it was to win a fifth career NCAA championship in come-from-behind fashion on his final discus throw, especially after falling short in the shot put final June 7 in Texas by a 69-1.25 (21.06m) to 69-0.50 (21.04m) margin against Arizona's Jordan Geist. He revisits learning about his father Anthony Washington capturing the discus gold medal with a 226-8 (69.08m) performance at the 1999 World Championships in Seville, Spain, only six months after Turner was born. Washington analyzes sharing these unique opportunities with his family, much like Lithuanian standout and Cal athlete Mykolas Alekna does with his brother Martynas Alekna and his father Virgilijus Alekna, a two-time Olympic discus champion. He also looks back on earning a silver medal for the United States at the Pan American U20 Championships in 2017 in Peru, and shares how exciting it is to make his first senior roster for the Americans, along with Sam Mattis and Brian Williams in the discus, as well as explaining his future in the shot put with a 2021 personal-best 71-8.25 (21.85m) to set the NCAA indoor record at Texas Tech. Washington also speaks about the ongoing realignment in college athletics, with Arizona State expected to move to the Big 12 Conference following the 2023-24 school year and how important it is for the Sun Devils to maintain the rivalry against Arizona, regardless of conference affiliation.
